Can the colour you wear really affect your mood?

Yes, Research shows that colours can greatly affect our mood, behaviour, and the way other people respond to us. Amazingly, colours can even change our heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and stress levels, as researchers Keith Jacobs and Frank Hustmyer discovered in 1974

Colour influences our everyday lives more than we realize. This is because colour and our emotions are closely connected. Brands and companies have been using these theories for years to influence our spending habits and behaviour.

Red – PASSION, INTENSITY AND LOVE

Red is the warmest and most dynamic of the colors—it triggers opposing emotions. It is often associated with passion and love as well as anger and danger. It can increase a person’s heart rate and make them excited and energized. Red is also known to increase a person’s appetite.

As the color of passion, red is great for a first date, not so great for the office. It also increases metabolism and raises blood pressure, which is why it’s used for stop signs and fire engines.

Orange – ENERGY FUN AND WARMTH

Orange enhances a feeling of vitality and happiness. Like red, it draws attention and shows movement but is not as overpowering.

This is a color of stimulation and enthusiasm. It’s not as aggressive as red, but can catch attention, so it’s good to wear in moderation, it portrays energy yet can be inviting and friendly.

Yellow -HAPPINESS OPTIMISM AND YOUTH

Yellow is perhaps the most energetic of the warm colors. It is associated with laughter, hope and sunshine and can make you feel spontaneous.

This is the happiest of all the colors and usually stimulates joy. However, yellow is considered an unstable color, so it can be over-energizing for the office and could make the wearer look weak.

Green – HEALING SUCCESS AND HOPE

Green symbolizes health, new beginnings and wealth. Green is the easiest on the eyes and can make you feel optimistic and refreshed.

This color denotes freshness, safety and harmony. It’s also associated with money and the “GO” signal for a traffic light—both great characteristics if you want to wear green to work.

Blue - LOYALTY STABILITY TRANQUILITY .

The color blue is almost always associated with blue skies, which when we are children is a positive thing — it means playing outside and fun. Historically it also symbolizes there are no storms to come and good sun for crops. This is why blue reminds us of stability and calm.

This is the color of truth and wisdom. It also makes you feel safe and relaxed and is also linked to intellect. It’s also the most stable color. So if you have a volatile or drama-filled workplace, blue is a great color to wear to counteract the tension.

Purple – LOYALTY, SPIRITUALITY AND LUXURY

Purple is associated with mystery, creativity, royalty and wealth. Lighter shades of purple are often used to soothe or calm a viewer, hence why it is used in beauty products.

Purple reminds people of royalty and luxury. It’s also the color of magic. However, since purple rarely occurs in nature, it can seen to be artificial and even untrustworthy.

Pink - – PLAYFUL, SWEET AND ROMANTIC

Pink represents youth, romance and tenderness. It’s inherently sweet, cute and charming. Darker shades can evoke feelings of  passion and power, whereas softer tones make us feel vulnerable, sensitive and sweet.

You have different ways of thinking about colors:

You can pick the color based on the mood you are already in.

Or you can pick the color based on the mood you WANT to be in and the rest is up to you.
